The municipality has shared that some West Elgin residents have recently reported an earthy or musty taste and smell in their tap water.
According to the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA), the issue may be linked to naturally occurring organic compounds, geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol. Officials note that while the odour and taste may be unpleasant, the compounds are not harmful at the levels detected in drinking water.
OCWA has already begun an oxidation process to remove the compounds and is closely monitoring water quality.
Flushing of storage tanks and the distribution system is also underway, along with increased water sampling, to ensure safe drinking water for all residents.
