As September approaches, many college and university students are busy getting ready for the new school year.
And whether you’re a first-year entering residence or a returning student living off campus, the St. Thomas Fire Department wants to send some very important messaging with you.
Chief Fire Prevention Officer Kim Destun notes that while it may be an exciting period for students heading off to post-secondary, now is the time to prioritize fire safety.
As Destun mentioned, the rental market is not ideal at the moment, especially for students. While it might be better financially to choose a more inexpensive room in someone’s basement for the semester, Destun warns that these are often the worst options in terms of safety.
An important item to establish in any place you’re staying is an escape plan. Destun reminds students to make sure they know their surroundings and a way out in the event of any emergency.
Another thing to keep in mind as you begin to set up your dorm or apartment is the amount of power needed to run your devices. Destun warns against using items that could lead to unwanted issues.
And you know all those important fire safety tips we follow at home? Destun explains why they may be even more vital while away at post-secondary.
Destun adds that if the place you’re currently living in doesn’t seem to meet the necessary safety standards and the landlord doesn’t seem to be bothered, to reach out to the local fire department from any municipality for assistance.
