St. Thomas Police are investigating after a resident was defrauded of more than $120,000 over several months.
According to police, the victim was first contacted online and later over the phone before being convinced to hand over the money. Members of the Criminal Investigations Branch have taken over the case.
Police are reminding residents to remain cautious online and shared several safety tips to help prevent fraud. These include getting a second opinion from friends or family, remembering that legitimate employers will never contact you through apps like WhatsApp or Telegram, and that they will not ask for payment in cryptocurrency or gift cards.
Residents are also encouraged to use the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre to stay informed about current scams and ways to protect themselves.
