An 11-year-old child was taken to hospital as a precaution Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle in a school zone in the city’s south end.
The youngster was struck around 8:40 a.m. and released from hospital with no apparent injury.
The driver was charged with careless driving and police note the incident highlights the importance of all road users slowing down and remaining alert in school zones and at intersections.
With students back in class, drivers are reminded to watch for children walking, biking and crossing roadways on their way to and from school. Extra caution and patience behind the wheel can help prevent tragedies and keep our children safe.
St. Thomas Police have launched a traffic project to address speeding in Community Safety Zones, specifically near schools.
A second project has also been created to target violations occurring within 100 metres of a school, including stop sign infractions, pedestrian crosswalk compliance, seatbelt use and distracted driving.
