A warm coat can make all the difference — and a local partnership is working to ensure no one in St. Thomas and Elgin faces winter without one.
The Goodwill Industries ClothingWorks Program, in collaboration with YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin, is once again collecting winter coats and accessories for those in need, as they prepare for the annual giveaway days in October.
Melissa Kempf, Communications Manager at the YWCA, breaks down what will be taking place next month.
They are actively seeking community donations, which can be dropped off at the Goodwill Donation Centre at 321 Elm Street in St. Thomas, labeled “ClothingWorks,” until October 2nd. Carol-Ann McIntyre, Program Coordinator at ClothingWorks asks that all donations be gently used, clean, and in good condition.
Last year, more than 400 visitors took home nearly 1,500 items, thanks to the generosity of the community and the hard work of volunteers.
The 2025 giveaway days in St. Thomas are scheduled for October 24th and 25th at the YWCA, with items distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
In addition to coats, McIntyre explains that the giveaway will include hand-knitted items, created by volunteers known as the “Yarnies.”
Volunteers will be on hand to assist attendees during their visit, ensuring a comfortable and respectful environment. Anyone interested in supporting the ClothingWorks winter drive is encouraged to drop off items at Goodwill, or donate online through the Goodwill website, clearly noting that the contribution is for the ClothingWorks winter coat giveaway.
Kempf adds that they are calling on community partners and local businesses this year, as they aim to supply upwards of 12,000 items to residents in need across St. Thomas, London, and Windsor.
Organizers emphasize that the giveaway is open to everyone in need, including newcomers to Canada and families experiencing financial challenges.
The event is designed to provide warmth, dignity, and community support during the winter months.
