Production of the Chevrolet branded BrightDrop electric vehicle cargo van at GM’s CAMI unit in Ingersoll, is scheduled to resume this fall.
Unifor Local 88 plant chair Mike Van Boekel, tells myFM what remains uncertain is when production at the on-site battery division will begin again.
Van Boekel says when BrightDrop production does resume in November, there will be one less shift and fewer vehicles will be turned out.
Long term, Van Boekel says he’s trying to be optimitic that demand for BrightDrop will increase, allowing GM to boost production at CAMI.
Industry analysts agree that low demand for BrightDrop affect’s battery production profitability, which makes a case for shipping U.S. produced batteries to Ingersoll for final vehicle assembly.
However, in a recent interview with Automotive News, GM Canada indicated battery production at the Ingersoll CAMI plant will resume in the future.
