The St. Thomas Fire Department is inviting the community to learn, explore, and take home some life-saving lessons as part of National Fire Prevention Week, running October 5–11.
Chief Fire Prevention Officer Kim Destun says this year’s theme is focused on something most people use every day but may not think about in terms of fire risk- Lithium-Ion Batteries.
“Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” highlights the importance of safely using rechargeable batteries found in common items like phones, laptops, power tools, and e-bikes. If damaged or misused, these batteries can overheat, catch fire, or even explode.
As part of Fire Prevention Week, St. Thomas firefighters will also be out in local schools sharing messages with students.
Adding that getting the massaging out to students has powerful ripple effect at home.
Families will also get a chance to meet our local firefighters in person and tour both city fire stations during the annual open house.
(This year’s event is set for Wednesday, October 8, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at both stations)
National Fire Prevention Week has been observed since 1922, making it the longest-running public health observance in Canada and the U.S. This year, the focus on lithium-ion batteries comes as more households rely on devices powered by rechargeable technology.
Destun encourages all residents to take a few minutes during the week to check their smoke alarms, review family escape plans, and learn how to safely use and store rechargeable batteries.
