It’s Small Business Week, and 94.1 myFM is shining a spotlight on local entrepreneurs across St. Thomas and Elgin County — proudly presented by Once Upon A Letter.
Today, we’re featuring Elgin Carpet One Floor & Home, a long-standing, family-owned business that’s been part of the St. Thomas community for more than half a century.
That was Denise Versteeg, who says the store has come a long way since her great uncle Jan first opened its doors in the 1960s. What started as a small flooring shop has now moved into its third generation of ownership, with Denise and her brother Michael now proudly carrying on the family legacy.
In addition to the large supply of carpet, hardwood, and luxury vinyl plank, Elgin Carpet One Floor & Home also offer a number of services.
For Versteeg, one of the best parts of running the business is the family atmosphere — both among staff and customers. She says many locals have been coming through their doors for generations, something that makes the work deeply rewarding.
Community involvement is another key part of their story, as Elgin Carpet One has donated time and materials to several important local initiatives.
And as Versteeg shared, that kind of community connection works both ways. Even through economic challenges, customers have continued to show up — choosing to support a locally owned business that sources many of its products from Canadian suppliers.
Looking ahead, Elgin Carpet One is currently in the middle of a major expansion — adding an 8,000-square-foot warehouse behind their existing location explains Versteeg.
As the business continues to evolve, Versteeg says one thing remains the same — their gratitude to the St. Thomas community that’s supported them for more than 50 years.
Elgin Carpet One Floor & Home is located at 1026 Talbot Street in St. Thomas. You can find more information at Elgincarpetonestthomas.ca or stop by for a quote and friendly service from their expert team.
