While fans across the country tuned in to watch the Blue Jays play Game 2 of the World Series on Saturday night, another group of baseball enthusiasts were being honoured for their contributions to the game closer to home.
The annual Ontario Baseball Gala, held in Toronto, recognized the dedication, skill, and volunteerism that make local baseball thrive — and three members of the St. Thomas baseball community came away with awards.
Long-time St. Thomas Cardinals president Diane Wakefield was presented with the London District Baseball Association Volunteer of the Year Award as well as the first-ever Commissioner’s Award, a testament to her decades of service to the local baseball community.
Dave Freeman was named Ontario Baseball’s Senior Umpire of the Year for his work over the past 25+ seasons.
On the youth side, Brody Bale, a 13U Select pitcher for the St. Thomas Cardinals, was recognized as Ontario Baseball’s 13U and under Select Pitcher of the Year.
