As we prepare for the end of Daylight Saving Time on Sunday, the St. Thomas Fire Department encourages residents to take the time to check the batteries in their smoke alarms.
On November 2nd at 2 a.m., the clocks will turn back an hour, allowing us to gain a little extra sleep and some valuable time to be fire safe.
That was Chief Fire Prevention Officer Kim Destun, who notes that the time change serves as a great reminder.
She also advises when alarms should be replaced.
If you do not have working smoke alarms and need either technical or financial assistance in making sure your residence is properly equipped, reach out to the St. Thomas Fire Department.
Destun reminds residents to also check in on elderly relatives to make sure their homes are properly equipped and offer to help them if they are unable to change the batteries on their own.
Furthermore, as we “fall back,” there’s a noticeable change in energy consumption. With more hours of darkness, lighting and heating demands tend to increase.
Double-check that all outlets in your home are not overextended and avoid plugging any heaters into extension cords.
