Ontario homeowners are being reminded that new carbon monoxide (CO) alarm rules will take effect on January 1, 2026 under the updated Ontario Fire Code.
The changes expand where CO alarms must be installed in existing homes. Any home with a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace, or attached garage will require working CO alarms. A new rule also covers homes heated by fuel-burning appliances located outside the house, such as in a utility shed.
By 2026, CO alarms must be installed next to every sleeping area and on every storey, including those without bedrooms.
Homeowners are responsible for installing alarms in their own homes, while landlords must ensure rental properties comply.
When purchasing a CO alarm, officials say to look for certification from CSA, ULC, or ETL, and to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
Officials urge residents not to wait until the deadline—install or upgrade alarms now to protect your family.
