The Elgin County OPP is once again calling on the public for assistance in solving a double homicide that occurred 27 years ago.
On the early morning of February 2, 1999, Southwold Fire Department and OPP officers responded to a house fire on Wellington Road, where they discovered the bodies of Roger Smith and Wendy Haveron.
Investigators later determined both had died from blunt force trauma and confirmed the fire had been deliberately set. Both deaths were ruled homicides.
The Ontario government is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.
The Elgin County OPP Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP’s Criminal Investigation Branch, continues to investigate the case. Police say even small pieces of information could prove crucial.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122, or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477/Ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
