The Kettle Creek Conservation Authority has upgraded its Watershed Conditions Statement to a Flood Watch, warning of possible flooding and ice jams along Kettle Creek, particularly in Port Stanley.
The upgrade comes as warmer temperatures and significant rainfall are expected to move through the region on Wednesday and Thursday.
Field observations taken on Tuesday show approximately six to seven inches of full ice cover along Kettle Creek between the Robert’s Line retaining wall and the Port Stanley harbour. Lake Erie also remains frozen at the mouth of the creek.
Localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas, floodplains, agricultural fields, and locations with poor drainage. Residents living along Kettle Creek, particularly those in flood-prone areas of Port Stanley, are being urged to monitor conditions closely and take precautions, including moving property out of vulnerable areas.
Officials are also reminding the public to stay away from fast-moving water and breaking ice. Riverbanks are slippery, water temperatures are dangerously cold, and ice conditions are unpredictable at this time of year.
The Flood Watch remains in effect until Saturday, February 21st, at 4:30 p.m.
