A milestone year for a winter tradition in St. Thomas.
The Coldest Night of the Year Walk is celebrating its 10th anniversary locally on February 28th, as residents bundle up to raise awareness and funds for youth experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness across St. Thomas and Elgin County.
As Organizer Kyle Rolph explains, funds raised locally will support Youth Unlimited in St. Thomas–Elgin and its overnight emergency support program for youth.
Rolph notes those dollars are critical because the program operates entirely on community generosity, covering staffing, utilities, and the costs associated with supporting vulnerable youth. The overnight emergency support program is part of a broader youth homelessness response in partnership with the YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin, Family and Children’s Services, CMHA Thames Valley, and The INN.
On walk day, activities begin at 4 p.m. at Youth Unlimited, located at 21 Edward Street in St. Thomas. Rolph breaks down what happens after check-in.
The event is open to all ages, though children 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those unable to attend in person can still register, fundraise and walk offsite with friends and family.
Rolph adds that every step taken helps towards their goal of raising $50,000.
