A new study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal suggests calls to Ontario’s mental health helpline for gambling-related issues have surged among young men since the expansion of online betting.
Researchers found that among males aged 15 to 24, the average monthly rate of gambling-related contacts increased by 317 per cent following the launch of government-run and private online gambling platforms, including PlayOLG.
The study analyzed more than 745,000 contacts to ConnexOntario between 2012 and 2025, with roughly 37,000 tied to gambling concerns, and found rates had been stable prior to policy changes.
Researchers say the findings highlight the need for stronger harm-reduction measures, advertising restrictions, and expanded access to treatment as gambling participation and marketing continue to grow.
