Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Thomas–Elgin is inviting the community to hit the ice for a good cause next weekend.
The organization’s annual Curl for Kids Bonspiel returns Saturday, March 14th at the St. Thomas Curling Club, bringing together teams from across the community to raise funds in support of local mentoring programs.
Marketing and Fund Development Coordinator Matt Fenerty says the event is designed to be welcoming for everyone, including first-time players.
This year’s event carries a festive theme. Dubbed “Luck of the Ice,” the bonspiel leans into an Irish celebration as the organization marks a major milestone.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Thomas–Elgin is celebrating its 55th anniversary this year — also known as the emerald anniversary — making the St. Patrick’s-inspired theme a natural fit.
Teams of four can register for the bonspiel, with each group playing two six-end games during the day. Organizers are capping the event at 24 teams, though a few spots are still available.
Funds raised through team pledges and donations will help support the mentoring program across St. Thomas and Elgin County.
Fenerty says the community’s support allows Big Brothers Big Sisters to continue making an impact for local youth.
Even those who don’t plan to curl are encouraged to come out and support the event by cheering on participants or making a donation.
More information, including registration details, can be found at bbselgin.org or through the organization’s social media pages.
