Communities across Ontario are receiving a boost to their emergency preparedness efforts, including local investments in Elgin County.
The provincial government announced $5 million in funding through the Community Emergency Preparedness Grant, supporting 115 municipalities and organizations with up to $50,000 each for equipment, training, and emergency planning.
As part of that funding, the Municipality of Bayham will receive $50,000 to purchase a trailer equipped with emergency supplies, including chainsaws, signage, spill kits, radios, and a sandbagging machine, to better respond to annual flooding in the municipality.
The Township of Malahide is set to get $49,031 to purchase flood mitigation equipment and radio equipment to enhance operational effectiveness during an emergency.
Provincial officials say the funding is aimed at helping communities better respond to emergencies and natural disasters, whether by upgrading facilities, improving communications or enhancing training.
Since launching in 2023, the province says the grant program has invested $15 million to support more than 300 recipients across Ontario.
