Fanshawe College is once again inviting prospective students to explore its Fanshawe College St. Thomas-Elgin Regional Campus during the Spring Open House on Saturday, March 28.
As part of that, myFM has teamed up with the college to spotlight programs available locally, including the Renewable Energies Technician program—now led by new coordinator Jeff Deconinck.
Deconinck, who stepped into the role within the past year, brings more than a decade of industry experience working in wind energy, where he progressed from entry-level technician to maintenance manager.
He says that real-world background helps shape how the program prepares students.
The two-year program covers everything from electrical wiring and fluid power systems to programmable logic controllers and energy efficiency.
Students also explore a wide range of renewable technologies, including wind, solar and biogas, while the program continues to evolve with emerging areas like battery storage and hydrogen production.
A key part of the program remains its co-op component, with two work placements giving students the chance to apply their skills in real-world settings.
According to Deconinck, demand in the industry is strong, with many students receiving job offers before they even graduate.
While some technical background can be helpful, Deconinck stresses it’s not required.
He says the program is designed to build skills from the ground up, welcoming students with little to no prior experience.
Beyond the classroom, the St. Thomas-Elgin Regional Campus offers smaller class sizes, allowing for more one-on-one instruction and hands-on time with equipment.
That personalized approach, combined with industry-informed training, helps give students a competitive edge when entering the workforce.
During the Open House, visitors will have the chance to tour the lab, view hands-on demonstrations, and meet some faculty.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the St. Thomas-Elgin Regional Campus.

The next intake for the Renewable Energies Technician program begins in September 2026.
