The Ontario government plans to reduce teachers’ college programs from two years to one in an effort to address a growing teacher shortage.
Under proposed legislation, programs would shift to three consecutive semesters over 12 months, with a stronger focus on classroom experience through minimum practicum requirements.
Education Minister Paul Calandra says the changes are intended to get more teachers into classrooms faster.
The move reverses a 2015 decision that extended the program length when the province was facing a surplus of educators.
