The province’s police watchdog has invoked its mandate following an incident Saturday afternoon in St. Thomas.
Shortly after noon, an Elgin OPP officer and a St. Thomas Police officer were transporting an individual when that person escaped from the moving police vehicle.
They fled on foot in the area of Wellington Road and Hwy. 3.
A coordinated search was initiated, involving members of the Elgin OPP, the OPP Emergency Response Team, the OPP Canine Unit, OPP Aviation Services and neighbouring police services.
The individual was subsequently found near Major Line and returned to police custody.
They required medical attention and were taken to hospital for assessment.
The Special Investigations Unit investigates incidents involving police officers where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
