The first candidate for St. Thomas mayor in the October municipal vote wasted no time in making clear his intention.
Doug Mactavish filed his nomination papers on the opening day last Friday.
If the name sounds familiar, Mactavish was the Liberal candidate in last year’s provincial election, losing out to incumbent Rob Flacks.
During an all-candidates’ meeting in February of last year, Mactavish referenced the need for housing in St. Thomas.
“I commend what was done with the tiny homes (Project Tiny Hope in St. Thomas). That was creative thinking, and that’s what we need moving forward. We need to develop homes where seniors can downsize, and put up their homes for a new generation.
“We need to build homes that are under 3,000 square feet for the average family. The mansions out there are going to continue to go up. The help needs to go to young families that don’t have that first home.”
myFM will profile all of the candidates as they declare their intention. A full interview with Mactavish will appear next week.
