Families in St. Thomas will have a chance to take part in a hands-on water safety event later this month aimed at preventing drownings and promoting safe boating practices ahead of summer.
The Elgin County Drowning Prevention Coalition is hosting Lifejacket Day on Saturday, May 23rd, in the Lake Margaret / Jim Waite Park area from 1 to 4 p.m.
The free, family-friendly event, taking place during Safe Boating Awareness Week, will bring together local partners to offer lifejacket fittings, safety demonstrations, and boating safety tips, along with interactive kids’ activities and prize giveaways.
Organizers will also highlight new water safety measures at Lake Margaret, including added lifesaving equipment and public education initiatives.
Community members will have the opportunity to learn proper lifejacket use, see emergency response equipment in action, and speak with local safety experts from organizations including the City of St. Thomas, St. Thomas Fire Department, St. Thomas Police Service, and Elgin County Emergency Management Services.
The Elgin County Drowning Prevention Coalition says the goal is to build awareness and encourage safe habits around local waterways as more residents head outdoors this summer season.
