Construction work is now underway on a major infrastructure upgrade along St. George Street in St. Thomas, bringing road closures and detours to the area through the summer months.
The City says St. George Street is closed to through traffic between Talbot Street and Scott Street as crews begin a multi-month reconstruction project expected to continue until August.
Local traffic access will still be maintained during the work.
The project includes replacement of sanitary and storm sewers, along with upgrades to the water main infrastructure beneath the roadway.
Once underground work is complete, the project will also see the installation of new curbs, sidewalks, asphalt, and roadway improvements designed to align with the City’s Complete Streets Guidelines, which focus on improving accessibility and safety for users of all ages and abilities.
Motorists are being directed to use a detour route via Talbot Street, Hiawatha Street, Scott Street, and St. George Street while construction is ongoing.
Updates on the project are expected to be posted regularly through the City’s project webpage.
