Just in time for the unofficial start to summer.
Less than a month following a funding ceremony, the first phase of flood mitigation work on William Street in Port Stanley has been completed, opening up the roadway to Main Beach in time for the Victoria Day weekend.
According to the Municipality of Central Elgin, the final topcoat of asphalt and a few remaining restoration items are scheduled for this week, along with additional street sweeping.
To substantially reduce the flood risk for homeowners, businesses and community assets, Central Elgin was the recipient of $16 million in federal and provincial funding.
Phase 2 of the project will begin in the fall, and additional work will include an assessment to evaluate options for extending the existing breakwater.
The initiative is a series of projects that are designed to improve stormwater infrastructure, and increase the community’s resilience to current and future large-scale storm events powered by climate change, noted Central Elgin Mayor Andrew Sloan.
