As we cap off National Pet Month, myFM is shining a spotlight on the people, organizations, and businesses helping care for the furry friends that make our community special with our week-long ‘Animal House’ Feature.
For nearly 33 years, Animal Aide of St. Thomas-Elgin has been giving vulnerable cats a second chance at life while supporting pet owners and animal lovers across the region.
Located at 333 Talbot Street in St. Thomas, the feline rescue cares for cats of all ages and needs, from newborn kittens to senior cats requiring palliative care.
Operations Manager Ashley Thornton says the organization can have anywhere from 150 to 300 cats in care, depending on the time of year, with kitten season bringing a major increase in demand.
“We are strictly a no-kill shelter,” Thornton explained. “Our goal is always to give these cats the love and care they deserve.”
While the rescue serves St. Thomas and Elgin County, Animal Aide also helps cats from surrounding communities, including Aylmer, Tillsonburg, London, Sarnia, Windsor, and even Toronto. Through partnerships with other rescue groups, the organization has also helped transport cats from high-kill shelters in Quebec to safety.
Animal Aide works closely with Elgin Animal Hospital to provide veterinary care, vaccinations, and spay and neuter services. Thornton notes that many rescue cats require extensive medical treatment before they are ready for adoption.
In terms of how they operate, Thornton notes the organization depends heavily on volunteers and donations. “With the exception of my position and one other, we are solely run on volunteers,” Thornton said. “We call them our crazy cat family.”
Beyond adoption, residents can support Animal Aide through donations, volunteering, or providing needed supplies like kitten milk replacement, litter, and cleaning products.
Looking ahead, the organization is preparing for its annual Cruise Night Event on May 31st at the Knights of Columbus Hall in St. Thomas, featuring classic cars, prizes, a barbecue, and fundraising activities to support the rescue’s ongoing work.
As Animal Aide approaches its 33rd anniversary this fall, Thornton says the organization remains grateful for the support it continues to receive from St. Thomas and surrounding communities.
