The value of partnerships between municipalities and service groups was clearly evident Wednesday afternoon at the Port Stanley Fire Station.
The Port Stanley Lions Club donated a 2026 Can-Am Defender Utility Vehicle (UV) to Central Elgin Fire Rescue Services.
The unit replaces the existing vehicle which was also donated by the Lions Club.
The organization has had a decades-long partnership with fire services in Central Elgin, advised President David Marr.

Central Elgin Mayor Andrew Sloan concurred.
“Their continued support directly enhances first responders’ ability to respond safely and effectively, while also helping to reduce capital costs for the municipality.”
The utility vehicle will be used to support emergency response along the Port Stanley shoreline, explained Central Elgin Fire Chief Jeff VanRybroeck.
It will allow for rapid access to areas that are not accessible by traditional emergency vehicles, technical rescue and medical incidents in remote or restricted locations.
In the peak beach season, the UV will be employed during special events, and daily support for beach rescue supervisors and rescue operations.
Ongoing maintenance and operational expenses will be managed by the existing Fire Rescue Services operating budgets.
VanRybroeck stressed that partnerships are a “key piece” for Fire Rescue Services.
Central Elgin Fire Rescue Services encompasses more than 100 volunteer firefighters and 25 lifeguards to provide essential emergency response, fire prevention, and public safety services.
