The Ontario Provincial Police is reminding drivers to keep their attention on the road and not on their pets while behind the wheel.
In a recent safety message, West Region OPP Sergeant Ed Sanchuk warned that allowing an animal to sit on your lap while driving can create a dangerous distraction and increase the risk of a collision.
According to Sanchuk, even a small movement from a pet can interfere with steering, braking, or visibility, and the risks become even greater in a crash.
Sanchuk warns that it’s not just lives at risk but also potential charges for drivers.
The OPP says keeping animals safely restrained helps protect not only pets but everyone sharing the road.
