Port Stanley Main Beach has once again earned the internationally recognized Blue Flag designation, marking its 16th consecutive year receiving the prestigious environmental certification.
The designation, awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education and administered in Canada by Swim Drink Fish, recognizes beaches that meet rigorous standards for water quality, environmental management, safety, accessibility, and visitor services.
Port Stanley first received Blue Flag status in 2010, becoming the first beach on Lake Erie to earn the distinction.
Mayor Andrew Sloan said the recognition is a source of pride for the community and reflects the efforts of municipal staff, volunteers, residents, and visitors who help keep the beach clean, safe, and welcoming.
The Blue Flag program is one of the world’s most recognized voluntary environmental certifications for beaches and marinas. To qualify, beaches must meet strict criteria related to water quality monitoring, accessibility, safety measures, environmental stewardship, and public education.
Port Stanley Main Beach remains one of the region’s most popular summer destinations, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Municipal officials say the Blue Flag designation provides assurance that beachgoers can enjoy a clean, well-managed, and environmentally responsible waterfront experience.
To maintain its status, the beach undergoes regular water quality testing, safety assessments, environmental education initiatives, and ongoing management practices throughout the season.
