Building on its Project Tiny Hope, the YWCA has announced its latest proposal for affordable seniors housing at 53 Hiawatha Street.
To kick-start the undertaking, the City of St. Thomas is donating a parcel of land adjacent to the Scott Street Municipal Parking Lot.
This will be paired with a contribution of $2.7 million dollars through the Affordable Housing Grant Program and Housing Accelerator Fund.
The existing church on the property will be repurposed into the Program House which would feature a community gathering space, a collective kitchen, private counselling rooms, and a dedicated Indigenous space.
Included in the housing development will be an intergenerational residence where young adults under the age of 30 will also live alongside the senior residents to foster a vibrant community.
The proposed development will build upon the YWCA’s ongoing investment in creating safe, inclusive and affordable housing solutions that foster independence, connection, and dignity for residents.
More details to follow, including an interview with Lindsay Rice, Executive Director of YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin.
