A 43-year-old St. Thomas man is facing several charges after police responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle parked in a residential driveway early Tuesday morning.
Just before 2 a.m., St. Thomas police were called after a homeowner reported an unfamiliar vehicle idling in their driveway.
Officers arrived to find two people asleep inside the running vehicle. Police say an open container of alcohol and drug paraphernalia were visible inside.
The driver was awakened and showed signs of impairment. Although an approved roadside alcohol screening test resulted in a pass, police say the driver performed poorly on a Standard Field Sobriety Test and was arrested.
Following an evaluation by a Drug Recognition Expert at police headquarters, the driver was determined to be impaired by a drug.
The 43-year-old has been charged with operation while impaired (alcohol or drugs), possession of a Schedule II substance, having care or control of a vehicle with cannabis readily available, and having care or control of a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor.
Police also arrested the 31-year-old passenger, who has been charged with obstructing police.
Both individuals were released from custody and are scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
