As wildfire smoke continues to impact air quality across the region, several municipalities and fire departments in Elgin County are asking residents to avoid outdoor burning, with some implementing temporary fire bans.
The Municipality of Central Elgin and Township of Malahide have issued fire bans effective immediately due to poor air quality caused by wildfire smoke. Officials say additional smoke from outdoor fires can further degrade air quality and increase health risks, particularly for children, older adults and those with respiratory or heart conditions.
In St. Thomas and Aylmer, fire officials are asking residents to voluntarily refrain from having recreational backyard fires while poor air quality persists. The departments note the request will remain in place for at least the next 48 hours, or until conditions improve.
Meanwhile, the Dutton Dunwich and Southwold Fire Departments have suspended the issuance of new burn permits due to hot, dry conditions and the ongoing wheat harvest. Existing approved burn permits remain valid at this time, though residents are encouraged to use caution and monitor conditions.
Residents are encouraged to follow updates from their local municipality or fire department as conditions continue to evolve.
