St. Thomas Police are encouraging residents to take a few simple precautions after a recent spike in vehicle entries across the city.
According to police, many of the reported incidents involved vehicles that had been left unlocked, with no signs of forced entry. The thefts have occurred in both residential neighbourhoods and commercial parking lots.
Items stolen have included passports, vehicle permits, wallets, cash, bank cards, personal identification, tools, electronics, sunglasses, clothing and sporting equipment.
In several cases, police say stolen bank cards were used to make unauthorized purchases before victims were able to cancel them.
Corporate Communications Coordinator Samantha Wakefield says these crimes are often opportunistic, with thieves targeting vehicles that are easy to access.
The message from police is clear: Lock it or lose it. Taking a moment to secure your vehicle could save you from replacing valuables and dealing with identity theft or financial fraud.
