After years of planning and construction, the City of St. Thomas Animal Services has officially opened the doors to its new shelter at 325 Bill Martyn Parkway, giving staff, volunteers and future adopters a modern space designed to better care for animals in the community.
The purpose-built facility replaces the former shelter on Burwell Road and features larger animal areas, dedicated meet-and-greet spaces and improved work areas for staff.
Animal Shelter Coordinator Laura Keates says it’s a milestone that’s been nearly a decade in the making.
Keates says the new building isn’t just about having more space. She expects it will improve the adoption process by giving potential pet owners the chance to interact with animals in a more natural, home-like setting.
While many of the building details were thought out with both animals and staff in mind, Keates is looking forward to adapting some easier processes when it comes to cleaning. Adding that she’s especially excited about the new cat house.
While the facility is now open, the City says residents may experience temporary delays as staff complete final technical work, including the phone system. In the meantime, residents can contact City Hall to be connected with Animal Services.
Visitors to the shelter may also experience temporary delays as staff works through minor technical issues with the building’s entry system. If the front door is locked upon arrival, residents can call for assistance, and a staff member will help provide access.
The City says the new shelter was made possible through years of community support, fundraising efforts and partnerships, and is expected to enhance animal care and adoption services for years to come.
