Aylmer Police are warning residents to be cautious when searching for rental properties online after investigating a suspected rental scam.
Police say a resident recently responded to a Facebook advertisement for a property in Tillsonburg listed at $2,000 per month.
The prospective tenant was asked to send a deposit before being allowed to view the property.
After reviewing the listing, officers determined the photos and property details had been copied from a legitimate Realtor.ca listing and used to create a fraudulent rental advertisement.
Fortunately, the resident recognized the warning signs before sending any money and did not suffer a financial loss.
Police are reminding anyone looking for a rental to avoid sending deposits before confirming a property’s legitimacy and verifying the identity of the landlord.
They also advise being wary of anyone who requests payment before allowing a viewing of the property.
