In April of this year, MPP Rob Flack and Central Elgin Mayor Andrew Sloan announced that the Port Stanley Flood Mitigation initiative was the recipient of almost $20 million in funding from three levels of government.
Guided by recommendations from the West Port Stanley Stormwater Management Plan, the Port Stanley Storm Sewer Upsizing Project addresses known stormwater capacity deficiencies that have contributed to localized flooding and surface ponding in the community.
The upgraded system will enhance Port Stanley’s resilience to significant rainfall events by improving drainage capacity and reducing the risk of roadway flooding, basement impacts and infrastructure disruptions.
Phase 1A of the project was completed in May 2026 along William Street, Edith Cavell Boulevard and the Hofhuis Park outlet.
The second phase of the project will begin after the Labour Day long weekend and will focus on Maud and Bessie streets, with the installation of storm sewers, replacement of all water services and road reconstruction.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of November.
A public information centre will be held Thursday (Aug 20.) between 5:30 and 7 p.m. in the upper hall at Port Stanley Arena.
