With students preparing to return to school and many local bus drivers beginning to practice their routes this week, Elgin OPP is reminding motorists to know the rules when it comes to stopped school buses.
Police say on roads without a median, drivers travelling in both directions must stop when a school bus is stopped with its upper red lights flashing.
Drivers should stop a safe distance away to allow students to safely get on or off the bus and cross the road.
Motorists must remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing or the bus begins to move.
OPP says failing to stop for a school bus can result in a first-offence fine of $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points.
Police are encouraging motorists to stay alert on local roadways as the busy back-to-school season gets underway.
