West Region OPP officers laid over a thousand speeding charges during the 2026 Labour Day traffic campaign which ran Sept. 4 through Sept. 7.
The safety education and enforcement campaign targeted: aggressive driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, distracted driving, and impaired driving.
Across the region, 1,004 speeding charges were laid, compared to 814 last year. Fifty-two motorists were charged with impaired driving, an increase of two over last year.
Other charges were as follows, with last year’s numbers in parentheses:
- Stunt driving – 37 (27)
- Seatbelt – 172 (123)
- Distracted – 11 (5)
In Elgin, there were 52 speeding offences and 21 seatbelt charges with other charges as follows:
- Stunt driving – 3
- Impaired driving – 0
- Distracted – 1
- Stunt driving – 3
