The City of St. Thomas is expanding its Miyawaki Mini Forest at Parish Park, and residents are invited to get their hands dirty and help with this year’s planting.
Volunteers will plant 340 native trees and shrubs on Thursday, October 1, with the planting taking place from 10 a.m. to noon.
The trees and shrubs are being supplied by Little Otter Tree Farm and funded by Trees for Life Canada.
The Miyawaki method involves planting trees and shrubs closely together to create a dense and diverse forest. The approach is designed to provide habitat for local wildlife and pollinators while creating a unique community green space.
No registration is required, and volunteers can simply show up and take part. The City says everyone is welcome, whether they have gardening experience or have never planted a tree before.
Those taking part are asked to dress for the weather and wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear, with hiking boots recommended. Gardening gloves will be provided, and sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle are also recommended.
The planting will take place at Parish Park on Benjamin Parkway.
