Ontario farmers are calling for more help as diesel prices reach record levels amid disruptions to global crude oil shipments linked to the war in Iran.
Farmers say the higher fuel costs are putting a major squeeze on their operations, with diesel needed to run everything from tractors and combines to equipment used for off-farm work.
Natural Resources Canada data shows the average price of diesel reached $2.75 per litre in mid-September, well above the previous record of $2.25 in 2022.
Premier Doug Ford says Ontario has already reduced its gas and diesel tax by about five cents a litre and says the province will increase its risk management program for farmers from $150 million to $250 million next year.
