Now that kids are a few weeks into the new school year, parents may want to make time for a conversation about social pressure, relationships and personal boundaries.
Ontario Domestic Violence Death Review Committee member Erin Lee says the move from middle school to high school can bring major changes as young people try to fit in, build new friendships and sometimes begin dating.
Social media can add another layer, especially when private messages, photos or personal information are shared without permission.
Lee says parents should help young people recognize when unhealthy behaviour may be developing.
Lee says parents do not need to have every answer, but they should make it clear their child can come to them with questions, even when the subject feels awkward.
Those conversations can also help teenagers feel more comfortable setting boundaries.
Lee says emotional health and personal safety deserve the same attention as courses, schedules and school supplies.
With students now well into the school year, the goal is not to frighten them, but to make sure they know how to recognize concerning behaviour, where to find support, and that asking for help is always an option.
