An uncertain for Unimotor workers at the Gaylord Road plant in St. Thomas.
Last week New York-based Standard Motor Products advised production will be cut at the 40,000-square foot facility and move to Mexico.
This will result in an undetermined number of layoffs.
In a statement, SMP advised cut in production is not the result of U.S. tariffs, instead due to – quote – “ongoing global competitiveness,” and market pressures.
Approximately 90 people work at the facility which produces auto temperature control motors.
Some of the production at the St. Thomas facility will move to an SMP plant in Reynosa, Mexico “within the next 18 months.”
