This year’s Christmas Care campaign launched Monday (Nov. 2) morning with a ceremony at Memorial Arena. It marks the 47th year that the festive food hamper and toy drive has brightened the lives of less fortunate individuals and families in St. Thomas and neighbouring communities.
The food hamper is full of items to make a complete Christmas dinner; additionally, there are toys and gifts for the children, along with hats, mitts, and scarves.
President Richard Auckland gave an overview of last year’s drive.
Every year, the program depends on an army of dedicated volunteers and support from local community groups like the St. Thomas Police Service, the St. Thomas Fire Department, Lions, Kinsmen and Rotary clubs.
Auckland stresses it is truly a “feel-good initiative.”
Kyla McNeil, representing Steelway Building Systems, a long-time Christmas Care supporter, acknowledged the support of Steelway employees, “Who make it easy for us to raise the money for our charities because it’s going back into our local community.”
Rain Doxtator and Mya Summers spoke of the impact of the program at Oneida Nation of the Thames. Doxtator pointed out that the annual campaign “makes Christmas brighter for Oneida families.
