It’s National Legion Week across Canada, designed to educate residents on the good work their local Branches do in their community.
In St. Thomas, the week was marked with a flag-raising and proclamation ceremony Monday morning at Veterans Memorial Gardens, with members of Royal Canadian Legion Lord Elgin Branch 41 on hand.
Among them was Branch President Valerie Clark, who explains what Legion Week means to those locally.
It kicks off annually on the third Sunday of September, in honour of the Battle of Britain Day, and wraps up Saturday the 26th. And it’s a special one this year, as the Legion celebrates its 100th Anniversary.
National Legion Week also helps drive new traffic to Branches, attract new members, and sign up new volunteers. Those who are interested in joining locally are encouraged to do so, with free memberships available in honour of the 100th Anniversary, explains Clark.
