The St. Thomas Panthers Girls Hockey Association is bringing its players, families, and the wider community together for a full day celebrating girls’ hockey.
The third annual Panther Day takes place Saturday, October 3, at the Joe Thornton Community Centre, with games, activities and plenty of opportunities for players across the association to connect.
The day begins with the association’s Fundamentals players hitting the ice for their first taste of hockey, followed by the U7 and U9 age groups. Emily Robertson, Director of Special Events with the St. Thomas Panthers Girls Hockey Association, says the atmosphere around those early games is one of the highlights of Panther Day.
Games will continue throughout the day, with activities planned off the ice as well, explains Robertson.
This year’s event will also have a special focus on breast cancer awareness. The Panthers are debuting new pink jerseys and partnering with St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital to raise funds for its mammography program.
Panther Day will wrap up with a new addition to the event: a 7:30 p.m. game featuring the Western Mustangs and Guelph Gryphons women’s hockey teams. The game is free and the community is invited to attend.
But for Robertson and the St. Thomas Panthers Girls Hockey Association, the goal is to make Panther Day about more than hockey.
