The St. Thomas Police are setting distracted driving as a focus for them this month. They have deemed the month “distracted driving enforcement month” and are utilizing various methods of enforcement all month long. Some of the methods include plain clothed officers, bicycles and unmarked vehicles.
The police are stressing the importance of putting down your phone and focusing on driving.
Traffic specialist Constable Chad Nevill says that residents using their phones while driving continues to be a major problem on area roads.
Nevill says that drivers on their phone pose a huge safety risk, as anything can happen on the road in a matter of seconds. Nevill says that they hope that residents get the message to slow down and put down their phone as officers will continue to be out there looking for them.
A speed monitoring sign has recently been installed on Axford Parkway between Schreyer Drive and Lake Margaret Trail. The police say this sign has confirmed that traffic is faster in this area, with 16 speeding tickets issued thus far.

Police have also focused on bicycles on the sidewalk on Talbot Street during July where 22 tickets were given.
