The City’s Animal Welfare Committee is establishing a fundraising subcommittee with the hopes of bringing a new animal shelter to the City. The committee decided to form the subcommittee as they feel that the $400,000 set aside for renovations of the existing shelter on Burwell Road in this year’s budget is not the best use of taxpayer dollars.
The subcommittee has set a fundraising goal of $400,000 that they hope to be able to raise by 2021. The committee feels that a 2021 goal is realistic as budget talks for next year will begin to take place in the fall.
Committee Member and City Councillor Joan Rymal says that they know there are a lot of residents who have a love of animals.
Rymal says that a new shelter at the proposed location of City owned land at Southdale Line and Fairview Ave would be ideal as the City grows. A new shelter on the proposed location is estimated to cost $1,000,000. In addition to accepting donations, the subcommittee is planning on organizing fundraising events.
Anyone interested in joining the subcommittee is asked to contact Joe Spencer at 519-631-5607.
