Southwestern Public Health is holding an event on Wednesday on Talbot Street to increase the awareness of opioid overdoses and also to train the community on Naloxone. The health unit will have a table set up just east of the Grand Central Apartment building at 300 Talbot Street from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Staff will be able to answer any questions surrounding opioid overdose and will be offering proper training on Naloxone.
Over 3,000 people die from opioid overdoses per year.
Public Health Nurse on the Sexual Health and Harm Reduction Team Margaret Hutchinson says increasing the awareness is important as overdoses can happen to anyone.
Hutchinson says that they know that opioid overdoses are extremely evident in the local community which also speaks to the importance of an event like this. The day is being held leading up to International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31st.
