Local veteran Ron Jewell has been recognized with the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation. The recognition is awarded to individuals who have performed commendable service to the Veteran community and are a role model to their fellow veterans.
Elgin-Middlesex-London MP Karen Vecchio, Provincial Minister Jeff Yurek, Mayor Joe Preston, Emergency Service Members and members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 41 were on hand for the recognition.
Jewell says that he never did the work for any type of recognition.
Jewell was presented with a certificate, lapel pin and a bar for him to wear with his decorations.
Jewell served in the Canadian Armed Forces for more than 28 years which included trips to Korea, Germany and Cyprus. Jewell has been a member of the Legion since 1980 and has held various positions including President, Past President, 1st and 2nd Vice-President among others.
Vecchio says that Jewell is very deserving of this recognition.
Jewell is involved in organizing the local Remembrance Day services and serves as the Parade Marshall for the Legion and the Southwold War Memorial Committee.
Jewell said that this recognition is the highest honour he can receive outside of the Queen calling him for tea, which he doesn’t think she will be doing anytime soon.
