Local OPSEU LCBO workers held a “Shop LCBO” information picket on Friday afternoon (Sept 6) outside of Minister Jeff Yurek’s office. The group is informing and speaking out against the Provincial Government’s expansion of beverage alcohol sales into convenience stores.
The government has announced 200 LCBO agency stores or “LCBO Convenience Outlets” are expected to be open by December of 2019 in what they refer to as undeserved communities.
President of OPSEU Local 163 Robin Reath says that they do not believe these outlets will actually be more convenient.
Reath says that for every dollar of alcohol sold at a convenience outlet, 10 cents goes to the store owner. This is money that across the Province will not be going towards, health care, schooling or other community efforts.
Lynhurst and Sparta were announced as locations that will be receiving LCBO Convenience Outlets.
myFM reached out to Minister Yurek for comment however were told that he was not in the office.
