The King George VI Lift Bridge in Port Stanley is set to undergo rehabilitation beginning in 2020. The bridge that was first constructed in 1938 that allows vehicles and pedestrians to cross over Kettle Creek has not had significant repairs done since 2007. Earlier this year a Detailed Condition Assessment and Load Limit Evaluation was done on the bridge to assess the structural, mechanical, and electrical condition of the bridge and as a result the County of Elgin will be issuing a rehabilitation of the lift bridge.
An information session about the rehabilitation will be taking place sometime in the fall to detail all the work that will be done. Throughout the construction, detours will be in place that will allow motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians resident business, and beach access. It is hopeful that at least one leaf of the bridge will remain open during construction to allow access for in-water traffic.
The constructions is currently scheduled to begin in March of 2020 and run until May 2021.
